An Indonesian boy and his mother attend a church potluck and lie about their dish.
There’s something truly magical about what filmmaker Nick Hartanto captures in Daly City. The film is focused on cultural assimilation and identity, commenting on the performative aspects that minorities are asked (sometimes even compelled) to take on in service of “fitting in”. Each performance in the film is pitch perfect (with a particularly terrific turn by Jett Automo as Bastian), and the cinematography beautifully captures each and every distinct moment of humanity. Director Nick Hartanto strikes every note of this dramedy perfectly, and honestly I can’t wait to watch what he makes next. I remember watching this film early on in the screening process and just being warmingly haunted by its ending; I cannot recommend it enough.
