Shot almost entirely on security cameras and iPhones, Dropping Off follows Thom, a lonely rideshare driver and aspiring musician, who is unexpectedly asked by a grieving passenger to spread her grandmother’s ashes. What begins as an awkward errand becomes a strange, funny, moving encounter with grief, music, and connection in the City of Dreams.
DROPPING OFF understands something deeply human: most of us aren't chasing fame—we're just hoping to be seen. What begins as a wonderfully scrappy portrait of a rideshare driver sharing his music with strangers slowly reveals itself to be something far more profound, exploring legacy, grief, and the unexpected ways we connect with one another. Visually inventive, emotionally generous, and unmistakably of Los Angeles, the film transforms dash cams, phone screens, and fleeting interactions into something genuinely cinematic. It snuck up on me, and by the end I found myself thinking less about success than about what we leave behind—and who carries a piece of us forward.
