FANGIRL

Shayda Frost

High school freshman Nat Chapman is singer Cam James’ biggest fan, so she claims. She walks us through her day of bullies, family, friends and fandom - showing her audience not just what it’s like to be a girl - but more, what it is to be a fangirl.

I totally got this film. I was a total fangirl when I was a teenager, I needed a connection to something bigger. This was such an intimate look into a 14 year old soul. With a society so focused on celebrity and social media, I can not imagine being a fangirl right now. Like the director, I am both terrified and
fascinated by this obsession. This film makes you think about what all of this is doing to our kids. — Becky M (Festival Director)

DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY

Shayda Frost is an Atlanta-native with family roots reaching from Tehran to Tennessee. Frost’s multicultural upbringing inspired her to become a filmmaker that challenges the status-quo. Frost earned a B.A in Theatre and Advertising, and an M.F.A in Film and TV Production from The University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. During this time, she helped make numerous award-winning short films.

Currently Frost is in post-production on mother’s land, a short documentary shot in Iran, concerning the Iranian diaspora. She has also just finished her latest short FanGirl, a film about female maturation in the midst of an obsession with a pop star.

Frost recently completed work as associate producer on Sony Pictures' theatrically released MISS BALA in 2019, working alongside director Catherine Hardwicke and star Gina Rodriguez.

Currently, she serves as Co-Producer for the new series DON'T LOOK DEEPER, also helmed by Hardwicke. The show stars Don Cheadle, Emily Mortimer and newcomer, Helena Howard. All episodes will release on Jeffrey Katzenberg's new platform, QUIBI, in June of 2020.
