ALA KACHUU

Directed by Maria Brendle

Produced by Nadine Lüchinger, Flavio Gerber

Switzerland, 2020

38 min

A young Kyrgyz woman is kidnapped and forced to marry. A drama about the desire for freedom in the clutches of tradition.

So beautiful and heartbreaking and hopeful. Director Maria Brendle takes us on a journey with Sezim that most of us can not even begin to relate to. It’s difficult to fathom that these stories happen in the world in 2021, yet they do. Films like this amaze me; I felt like I was there with Sezim. The fear and betrayal that she felt was palpable. I haven’t stopped talking about this film since the first time I saw it.
