Marga in Mexico City is a slice-of-life film set during the aftermath of Selena Quintanilla’s death in Mexico City in 1995. The film captures the experience of MARGA SALINAS, a Dominican woman who at 21 weeks pregnant finds out her husband is having an affair.
The story is told through vignettes of Marga’s experience and emotional journey after discovering the affair.
She first arrives in Mexico City to surprise her husband, RODRIGO SALINAS, and on the way to his apartment, she hears of Selena Quintanilla’s murder on the radio. When she gets to his apartment, he is nowhere to be found. Marga starts seeing signs in the apartment that her husband might be sharing it with another woman. She waits for him to arrive and when he does, he is indeed with a woman and they are coming from the beach.
The affair and the death of Selena create a deep sense of grief for Marga and push her to find answers outside of her current situation. After this, the film shows how Marga spends the rest of her time in Mexico, trying to find some joy and independence within the chaos while Rodrigo desperately tries to make amends. In this journey, we see how she struggles to decide whether to forgive Rodrigo or not.
