The Shift

Directed by Sami Abdou

Produced by Danielle Roosa & Leanna Talmeister

United States | English | 15' | Documentary

A documentary short unveiling the dark underbelly of animal healthcare, following one veterinarian's battle to survive in an industry he once loved.

Oh boy. As someone who’s witnessed the struggles of veterinary medicine firsthand, and who lost my soul kitty this year, this film hit especially hard. Filmmaker Sami has destroyed me. With raw, unfiltered access, this film captures the heartbreak and resilience found behind the doors of a vet clinic. It offers an honest, eye-opening look at the emotional toll on vets and the realities of understaffed clinics. It’s a deeply important film that paints a larger picture through one doctor’s experience: moments of devastation balanced with rare glimpses of hope. After watching, I found myself loving vets even more. I can’t recommend this film highly enough. It is, perhaps, my favorite at the festival this year.
