In 1999, a chain letter began to matriculate around online message boards. The goal? Get New Kids On The Block’s 1989 music video “Hangin’ Tough” on Total Request Live. Why? Cuz it wud b funny lmao.

Remember rushing home from school to drink Fanta and watch Carson Daly unveil the top ten music videos of the moment? He may have been a regular looking GenX-er from Santa Monica, but CD held the fate of every aspiring band or pop star’s lives in his hands on the reg. His list was important. It was religion. It made him God. And we all tuned in to worship him and our other idols at 3pm Monday - Friday. TR(ol)L recounts one specific day, when viewers, in an attempt to have the smallest amount of control in their mortal lives, usurped the control from the powers that be on MTV and brought back New Kids On The Block. This wit infused doc blends professional journalism with clever animations. It’s nostalgic, fast moving, and fun. — Erin Brown Thomas, Artistic Director
